“So… is reflexology just a foot massage?”
I get this question all the time, and it’s a fair one. The honest answer is: they’re related cousins, not twins. Both are hands-on, both feel great, and both help you relax — but they’re doing different jobs. Here’s the plain-English version so you can choose what you actually need.
Massage: working the muscles
Massage therapy works directly on your muscles and soft tissue — kneading, stretching, and releasing knots and tension across the body. If you’ve got a tight shoulder, a stiff neck, or sore legs after a workout, massage goes straight to the source and works the tissue itself.
Reflexology: calming the whole system
Reflexology stays on the feet (and sometimes hands), applying gentle, precise pressure to specific reflex points. Instead of working out a specific knot, the aim is to calm your whole nervous system and invite a deep relaxation response. You stay fully clothed apart from your feet, and most people find it profoundly settling — many drift off entirely.
Think of it this way:
- Massage = “My body is tight and I need the muscle worked.”
- Reflexology = “I’m wound up, run down, or not sleeping, and I need to properly switch off.”
Which one should you book?
- Sore, specific muscle tension? Massage is a great fit.
- Stress, poor sleep, feeling frazzled, or you just need an hour of true calm? Reflexology is beautiful for that.
- Honestly? Many people benefit from both, at different times.
There’s no wrong answer — it’s about what your body is asking for this week.
A note on what reflexology is (and isn’t)
Reflexology is for relaxation and stress reduction. It doesn’t diagnose or treat medical conditions, and it’s not a substitute for medical care or for registered massage therapy. It’s a gentle, restorative complement to a well-rounded approach to feeling good.
